Client Challenge
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is an intense facility. To deal with issues of retention and burnout, it needed flexibility in staffing & scheduling for its diverse administrative, professional and support staff in many clinical settings. It confronted two other challenges: the national shortage of Registered Nurses and the Center’s location in midtown Manhattan. After first developing some of its own support materials, it chose to customize Rupert & Company’s FlexWise™ suite of online flexibility guidelines and training to meet its goals.
FlexWise™ Intervention
MSKCC’s work environments include a complex hospital, research facilities, outpatient clinics and administrative offices. Each had different needs for flexibility, and the forms of flexibility varied. In a process of substantial customization of the FlexWise™ Guidelines, MSKCC and R&C staff worked closely together to modify virtually every aspect of the standard approach to create a tool that could serve the Center’s diverse population.
Organizational Outcome
Hospital staff and managers have been very satisfied with the new approach to flexibility. The tools have been made available with certain options highlighted based on departmental needs. And the guidelines and training have evolved to meet new needs as they develop. Employee satisfaction and retention have improved notably as a result. |
